Sleep apnoea and cardiovascular health
At Dr Safwane El Hatimi's practice, the cardiology consultation assesses the possible cardiovascular consequences of sleep apnoea. Screening and coordinated care with the GP or a sleep specialist are arranged according to the situation.
Sleep apnoea and the heart
Sleep apnoea is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular problems, including hypertension, treatment-resistant hypertension, atrial fibrillation, heart failure and coronary artery disease.
When should sleep apnoea be considered?
Possible signs include loud snoring, observed breathing pauses during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, unrefreshing sleep, morning headaches or blood pressure that remains difficult to control despite appropriate treatment.
Cardiovascular assessment
Assessment includes a detailed history, blood pressure measurement and an ECG. Echocardiography, Holter ECG or ambulatory blood pressure monitoring may be added according to each patient's indication.
Coordinated care
Care involves referral for a sleep study when indicated, regular follow-up of cardiovascular risk factors and close coordination with the healthcare professional providing the specific treatment for sleep apnoea.
